Winter means beautiful landscapes. Subtle shifts in snowy shadows. Crisp skies. Light winking off icy mountain peaks. Longviews through bare trees.
But it can be difficult to paint plein air in the cold.
If you’re feeling cold, it will distract you from painting.
Stay physically comfortable to increase your odds of success.
Here are 6 tips to stay warm
1. Layers 🧥
Dress in warm layers. Wear a proper winter coat and hat. Remember, you stand still when you paint. You are not moving to build heat, like hiking. Dress warmer than you think.
2. Hand and Toe Warmers ♨️
You can wear gloves to keep your hands warm. But gloves get in the way when you’re painting. So keep hand warmers in your pockets. Slip in your hand, as you need to warm it up. Toe warmers help too.
3. Proper Boots 🥾
A good pair of boots will keep your feet warm. Most paint standing. So pick a pair with stable support. Winter hiking boots are a great option. Especially if you need to walk a distance to your painting spot.
4. Ground on Cardboard 📦
Stand on a piece cardboard, or an old yoga mat, in extreme cold, or if the ground has snow. This will further insulate your feet to stay warm.
5. Warm Drinks 🍵
Bring your favorite Thermos, Stanley, Yeti, or insulated bottle. Fill it with hot tea or coffee. This keeps you warm on the inside. It keeps you energized in the cold. Take a few sips of steamy liquid while you admire your beautiful progress.
6. Know Your Limit 💙
Is it too cold? Don’t torture yourself. Don’t be unsafe. Save your painting for another day. Or paint inside your car, looking outwards. Know what temperatures are too cold for you.
Consider these tips before your next winter session. They will help you focus on your painting, instead of the distracting cold. Stay warm.
